Background

Fr. Joe studied A.B. Sociology at Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan), Cagayan de Oro City before joining the Society of Jesus. He completed formation in philosophy (Ateneo de Manila University), Bachelor in Sacred Theology and Master of Arts in Theology (Loyola School of Theology) before his ordination to the priesthood in 1993. After his assignment as vocation and pre-novitiate director of the Jesuit Philippine Province, he was sent to Rome, where he completed the Licentiate and Doctorate in Spirituality at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. While doing his studies, he also worked as regional secretary for Asia-Pacific at the Jesuit General Curia in Rome. For his dissertation, he wrote about the grace of vocation in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola with Fr. Anton Witwer, S.J. as mentor. He is currently the Rector of Loyola House of Studies, Ateneo de Manila University.
